From a Fellowship to a Constituted Body
How AAASF came to be
For many years the alumni of ASF MOUAU kept in touch the way old friends do — by phone, at weddings, at funerals, and whenever two of us found ourselves in the same city. It worked, but it did not scale, and it did not outlast a generation. What was missing was an institution.
The First Constitution, 2019
The decision was taken to constitute the alumni body formally, and a Constitution Draft Committee was set up under the leadership of Pastor Michael Igbojionu, with Mark Okechukwu Eleke, Collins Nwullu and Godspower James as members. The committee produced a draft and submitted it to the Executive Committee, then presided over by Elder Godswill Chimaobi, the Association's first President.
The draft was ratified and adopted by the general membership on Saturday, 12 October 2019, during the second Homecoming, held on 11 and 12 October 2019. At that same gathering Dr. Daniel E. Azunna emerged as the second President of the Association, and it was his Executive Team that first governed under the new document.
The Review of 2024
Five years of use taught the Association what the first draft could not have anticipated. At an Expanded Executive Committee Meeting on Saturday, 10 February 2024, the house resolved unanimously to review the Constitution and strengthen the operational effectiveness of the Executive Committee.
A seven-member committee was constituted, chaired by Engr. Godspower James, then Executive Secretary of AAASF, with Mr. Ajaegbu Samuel C. as Secretary, Mr. Chibuzor Ekpendu as Assistant Secretary, and Pastor Igbojionu Michael, Mrs. Tochi Chisom, Mr. Okoro Lucky and Mrs. Queen Nwaogwugwu as members. The sitting Executive Committee served ex officio.
The revised Constitution was ratified by the General Assembly and adopted on 7 July 2024. It is the document that governs the Association today, and it is published in full on this site.
The Scholarship Foundation, 2024
The same expanded meeting of 10 February 2024 conceived a second institution. A nine-member committee chaired by Engr. Kelechi N. Nwankpa, with Mr. David Emmanuel as Secretary, was charged with designing a scholarship scheme for indigent Adventist undergraduates at MOUAU. The committee reported to an Expanded Executive Committee Meeting on 16 June 2024, its recommendations were ratified on 23 June 2024, and the Scholarship Foundation of the Alumni Association of Adventist Students' Fellowship was formally established at the General Meeting of July 2024, governed by its own Regulations and Bylaws.
Where We Are Now
The Association today runs a scholarship foundation, a career growth department housing the AAASF Academy and the Mentorship programme, a welfare function, a ventures arm working towards financial self-sufficiency, and a diaspora network. Its first national Conference is planned for Lagos in 2027, and the Homecoming continues on its three-year cycle at Umudike.
The history of this Association is still short. That is precisely why it is being written down.
